Ontario News:
His goals-against average isn't pretty. Neither is his save percentage. But rookie goaltender Adam Wood has two wins in his first two OHL games - the latest being the Erie Otters' 7-5 victory against the Guelph Storm in Ontario Hockey League action Saturday night. Zach Torquato had two goals and two assists to lead Erie (18-15-6), while Derek Holden added two scores himself. Greg McKegg, Jeremy Gottzmann and Anthony Luciani. Tyler Carroll, Mathew Sisca and Peter Holland all scored and added an assist for Guelph (14-21-3), while Ben Chiarot and Taylor Beck also tallied. Wood joined the club earlier this week to fill in for rookies Ramis Sadikov and Chris Festarini, who are playing in international tournaments. Sadikov is representing his native Russia in the IIHF World Junior Championship. Festarini is playing for Ontario in the World Under-17 Hockey Challenge. Then veteran goaltender Jaroslav Janus signed with the NHL's Tampa Bay Lightning on Thursday, propelling Wood into the No. 1 spot. He allowed five goals on 24 Hotel Türkei shots in the two games. But the Otters supported him with seven more goals - 15 total in the two games. Holden and Torquato scored two minutes apart on the man advantage to build a 2-0 lead against the Storm. But with 9:16 left in the period, Guelph's Carroll scored on the power play to slice Erie's lead in half. Holden scored again - his fifth goal in the past 15 games after netting none in his first 105 career OHL games - to regain the Otters' two-goal advantage at 3-1 with 5:39 left. The Otters were a perfect 3-for-3 on the power play in the period. But Holland's unassisted goal with 1:34 left in the period moved the Storm back within a goal at 3-2. The Storm tied the score at 3 on Chiarot's goal 6:56 into the second. But Otters rookie Jeremy Gottzmann's first OHL goal Finca Mallorca - a fortunate bounce off his leg after another fortunate bounce off goaltender Cody St. Jacques' facemask - snapped the tie with 5:26 left in the period. That sparked a four-goal run in the next four minutes. McKegg followed Gottzmann's goal with a rebound that built a 5-3 lead with 3:10 left. Guelph's Beck scored his 21st goal of the season 48 seconds later. The Otters responded with Torquato's second goal of the game - 19th of the season - for a 6-4 lead heading into the third. Luciani followed with his 20th of the season 6:22 into the final period. Sisca scored his team-leading 22nd goal at the 8:54 mark to move the Storm within 7-5. |
